AT&T Horror StoryLast year AT&T made us an offer we could have (but foolishly didn't) refuse. We switched to them for long distance service, and everything was fine until about three months later when they informed us that the plan we had signed on to was being terminated. We called AT&T and switched to another apparently similar plan—the charges per minute and the access fee appeared virtually identical to the old plan, leaving us wondering why they had terminated that plan. Our next bill contained a clue. We had forgotten to ask them about overseas rates, and they hadn't volunteered any information. Under the old plan, our rate to the UK was approximately 15 cents per minute (which is no great bargain, but not terribly important given that we normally make no more than an hour's worth of calls to the UK in any given month). When our next bill came, we discovered that we had been charged $95 for calls to the UK totalling roughly 55 minutes—a rate of approximately $1.75 per minute, almost 1200% higher than previously. AT&T had considerably more than recouped the investment they made when they induced us to switch from MCI. The day after that AT&T bill, we switched back to MCI, and plan to stay there. |
